Rome, Tiber, floods Italy, Venice.

Rome’s mayor has declared a state of emergency due to the risk that the river Tiber may burst it’s banks.
Following 2 weeks of intensive rain in Italy, Friday saw the whole of Rome’s forecasted rain for the month of December fall in 1 day !!
The river Tiber is currently 5 metres or 15 feet above its normal level, this is the highest the Italian river has been over the last 40 years of Italian history.
The Milvio bridge built 200BC an ancient bridge in Rome has been closed due to risk of collapse as has the Angel’s bridge (Ponte s. Angelo). The Tiber island is also under risk.
The Italian military, the red cross and the civil protection teams are on alert and distributing sand bags.
All of Italy during the last 2 weeks has suffered from a low depression. Rain has fallen from the north to the south.
Venice St Mark’s square is currently under water.
Access to the Sicilian islands around the island of Sicily, the Egadi Islands, Favignana, Marettimo is blocked.
People accessing their Italian property in the Island of Elba are also reporting ferry problems.
All this has brought very early snow in the Italian ski resorts of the Alps and the Dolomites. Early skiing and a good skiing season is forecasted.
If you are looking for Italian ski property, MIPC currently has 2 bedroom apartments for sale in Val Gardenia.

Putin Medvedev Russian property in Italy

Putin continued to hold his annual TV live questions and answers, many asked why him and not the current president. Probably because Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is to pay a working visit to Italy at the invitation of his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano on Saturday, the Kremlin press service said. Medvedev will visit the southern Italian city of Bari, where a Russian Orthodox Church is located. The St. Nicholas Orthodox church was built in the early 20th century to welcome Russian pilgrims coming to worship St. Nicholas, one of the most revered Orthodox saints. It became the property of the city of Bari in 1937. The Italian government decided to return the ownership of the Russian Orthodox Church as a friendly gesture when Russia's then president Vladimir Putin visited the country in March 2007. A document was signed in Rome last month to confirm the handover.

Berlusconi states Barack Obama is tanned

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has provoked criticism for describing Barack Obama as "young, handsome, and tanned".

He made the remarks after a meeting with the Russian president in Moscow.

Opposition politicians in Italy said Mr Berlusconi's remarks about the US president-elect were at worst, racist and at best, undiplomatic.

Mr Berlusconi shrugged off the criticism, saying those who disagreed with him were humourless "imbeciles".

'Great compliment'

Mr Berlusconi made the quip at a news conference with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

''Obama is young, handsome and also tanned, so he has all the qualities to agree with you,'' he told the Russian leader, speaking in Italian through a translator.

The Italian news agency Ansa said Mr Berlusconi later defended the remark, calling it "a great compliment".

Responding to a reporter's suggestion that the remark might be misunderstood, he accused his opponents of not having a sense of humour.

''God save us from imbeciles,'' he added.

Would you go public ?

Won in Catania, on the east coast of Sicily, known as the home of Cosa Nostra the Sicilian mafia, rumours have it the winner has gone into hiding, as the hunt starts to find out who has won.

Ironically the council of Catania recently received a similar amount to help it through financial difficulties.

The winner will be able to buy a fantastic property in Italy now.

Thanks to everyone who placed a bet, but unfortunately none of you won. The jackpot has now returned to a small 20 Million euros. Good luck.

Sgarbiland or is that Sgarbilandia.

In today’s Italian “broadband” La Stampa translated as The Press, a new brand has been given to the Salemi regeneration project, namely “Sgarbilandia” or in English Sgarbiland, named after the local mayor Vittorio Sgarbi.
The mayor, Sgarbi, is now world famous for offering free italian property in Salemi to anyone who will refurbish it into an Italian home in 2 years. Salemi is now on the world map, the town is buzzing.
In La Stampa, Sgardi talks about an inversion in Italian migration traditionally from south to north in search that the streets are made of gold. “Now it will be the rich from the north who will come here and there is no way they cannot bring riches with them.”
The local council’s head of urban planning and regeneration Mr Bernardo Tortorici, states the local council staff are overwhelmed with applications coming from Australia, Canada, the Baltic States, Germany, France, Russia, Lithuania, and America. The local receptionist, not known for her linguistic abilities, is struggling and the backroom staff are frantically searching title deeds to ensure the properties are in the name of the council. Mr Tortorici states “…but we will make it”.
Yesterday Mr Sgarbi claimed that one of the most important figures in the restoration of old Italian towns has come on board, the Italo-Swedish developer Daniele Khilgren, who has brought other ancient hill towns back from the brink and recently turned cave dwellings in the ancient southern town of Matera into a unique hotel.
With famous celebrities signing up for the houses including american Vogue’s Anna Wintour and world music’s Peter Gabriel and some of Italy’s most beautiful women, including socialites Anna Falchi and Afef Jnifen, and some of Berlusconi’s government….I can’t wait for the next episode.
In fact…….I have a meeting with the Mr Tortorici next week to clarify a lot of questions and present some clients fantastic projects…..Until then…….David

Alitalia for sale

mipc - get a 1 euro house

What is happening to Italy ?

Last week it was italian property for sale for 1 Euro in Sicily (which you can apply for at www.mipc.co.uk ) and this week its Alitalia up for sale.

Augusto Fantozzi today Tuesday 23 september 2008 in 3 national Italian newspapers and 1 international newspaper, has offered to the world his last attempt to save Alitalia.

Further to many salvage packages;
1. Air France, pulled by Berlusconi, in his manifesto he promised one of his first duties was to save Alitalia. Failed.
2. €300M state aid. Failed.
3. CAI (Compagnia aerea italiana) ; some unions just want too much and the union members who said “Better bankrupt than in the hands of robbers”…Do these people really want a job and would you buy a company whose employees have that mentality. Failed.

Now the government appointed administrator, Fantozzi, has certain responsibilities to protect his own legal duty.
He must be seen as trying to save the company. Otherwise he too may have personal problems when he announces bankruptcy.

If Lufthansa want the most lucrative cargo division ? or Air One, Carlo Toto, the Italian low budget airline, want the best of the airline stock then we may see a result, but more than likely by Friday when no one has made an offer, I mean would you wait for it to be advertised on the net if you were seriously considering buying an airline like Alitalia, the last one out can turn out the lights.

Arriverderci Alitalia.

Salemi, Sicily. Italian property for free….1euro.

Apply for a FREE house in Sicily, Italy.

The recently appointed mayor, Vittorio Sgarbi, of Salemi under the guidance of his cultural executive, Oliviera Toscani have decided to bring back to life the historic centre of Salemi by giving away the houses.

The historic town centre which locals abandoned after an earthquake in 1968 is in need of drastic restoration. The mayor has decided that giving away the houses under the condition to restore them in accordance with local building regulations is the solution to regenerating the area.

International celebrities including the owner of Inter football club, Massimo Moretti , along with rumours of Peter Gabriel and Lucio Dalla are among some of the interested parties.

You too can become a part of this new celebrity hotspot and innovative regeneration project !!!

We will write a letter of interest on your behalf to the local council administration. It is not yet sure how the houses will be allocated, but the local council say that within a month further news on allocation will be divulged to those who have expressed an interest.

If you are allocated an Italian property the following conditions will apply ;

  • Purchase the house from the council for a nominal fee, 1 Euro !!!.
  • Restore the house according to local planning & building regulations.
  • Use local Italian builders.
  • Complete restoration within a 2 year deadline.
  • Estimated budget of restoration is 1000 euros per square metre, in Sicily.
  • MIPC will project manage the restoration of the Italian house on your behalf.

Salemi is 72km south west of Palermo and 35km south east of Marsala.

British Airways, Ryanair, easyJet and Air Malta all have direct flights to Sicily. Ryanair flies from Stansted to Palermo and less frequently from Luton and Birmingham to Trapani; EasyJet from Gatwick to Palermo.

With 12 months of sun and breathtaking views across the hills to the Mediterranean Sea, this is your chance to own an historic part of Sicily, Southern Italy and enjoy the Italian culture in your Italian holiday home.

To help reassure you that this is not a scam of any sort, I have personally spoke with the council of Salemi and this news has been doumented both in The Times and The Guardian.

If you are interested please email David Moss for further details.

Act quickly as since posting this blog this morning i have already received 16 enquires.

Ferragosto Italy national summer bank holiday 15/8/08

Here in Italy it’s the peak of summer. Tomorrow the 15th August is the ferragosto national bank holiday.

All of Italy comes to a grinding halt the week before and after ferragosto. Since 2 weeks ago businesses have been closing down per le ferie and the majority will remain closed till the end of the month.

If you are conducting business with Italy, forget it, as all the Italians have gone to the sea, to spend their hard earned holidays at the lido. With large traffic jams on the motorways, the Italian's enjoy their annual migration, totting their horns as they impatiently want to get to their destination, where they will spend days squeezed onto the beaches paying extortionate rates for beach loungers, umbrellas and hotels. Yet they all still love it. With months of diets, the best swimming costumes and don't forget those shades, they love strutting up and down the beach. This ritual continues into the evening as they dress up for the famous passagiata, walking along the main ports and town centres of the best Italian holiday destinations.

For the saner international holiday maker i would recommend to keep away from the beaches and head in land to the Italian Lakes. Still very popular with holiday goers and some discreet Italians they offer a good climate, spectacular views and fresh water. Particularly I like Lake Iseo. Located between Lake Garda and Lake Como it offers similar conditions but without the mass tourism. I have recently wrote a local English language newspaper called "The independent Lake Iseo View". Click here to go to the website and download a copy. It discusses holiday venues, swimming pools, towns, holiday homes, Italian property, villa rentals and helps you enjoy your precious holiday time by reviewing these for you.

A tutti un buon ferragosto.

Ciao David

Italian life

ITALIAN banks were always parsimonious about handing out loans and Italians traditionally dislike credit. This means Italy could escape the worst effects of the credit crunch, said Pierpaolo Benigno, an economics professor at Rome’s Luiss University.
“Lending to companies, which has been well monitored, remains consistent and although private mortgages have dipped, that’s due to rising interest rates. There is no fallout from the credit crunch here.”
Consumer lending is now on the rise but Italy has some catching up to do, said Benigno. “Banks are traditionally more familiar with the people they lend to and are more vigilant, and there remains a cultural bias against credit.”
But crunch or no crunch, Italians are suffering from soaring food and fuel prices, with consumer spending dropping 2.3% year on year in April.
Shoe purchases were down 6.4%, while supermarkets report Italians are abandoning the Mediterranean diet they made famous for cheaper frozen foods.
The daily newspaper Corriere della Sera summed it up last week as: ‘The Italian paradox – fewer debts, greater pessimism’. Italians, it said, now faced the ‘Syndrome of the fourth week’ as fridges are emptied before payday.
The employers’ group Confindustria believes economic growth will hover at about 0.1% this year – well below the 0.5% predicted by the government – and Italian business confidence fell to a three-year low in June, as Italy’s legions of small manufacturers fear for the prospects of domestic and foreign sales.
Car crashes are reportedly decreasing in the capital at the end of each month as car-mad Romans run out of money to buy petrol, while managers at one low-cost supermarket run by a charity in Rome’s suburbs were surprised to see far more Italian than immigrant families showing up for cut-price food.
House prices did rise by about 1.6% in the first six months of the year, the economics institute Nomisma said, but house sales are set to fall this year by 5%-6% compared with 2007. Benigno said:
“There is a stability in house prices right now because both supply and demand have fallen but demand is now set to fall faster, with prices in the suburbs the first to fall.”

Italian logistics

Demand for industrial and logistics properties has slowed

through the year and remains relatively low compared to

supply. Some secondary locations have seen vacancy rise, as

new speculative schemes lead to an oversupply of stock. In

contrast, prime markets still have relatively high demand and

lower vacancy rates. Rental values have remained stable,

although with some regional differences. The outlook for the

freight sector remains largely positive in prime locations.

Berlusconi 3rd time lucky ?

Tutti,

Berlusconi returns for the 3rd time after this weekends general elections with a convincing victory over Veltroni's centrre left Democratic Party. His "Freedom Folk" party saw a large backing for the extreme right, Northern league....does Bossi never give up.

Berlusconi is renouned for his politically sensitive bluffs (remember the nazi reference to the german chancellor) and the way his previous government let Italy's public finances run out of control, threating the stability of the Euro, (bet their not happy in Brussels today).

With Spain's economy according to the EU stronger than Italy's Berlusconi has a difficult task to maintain his manifesto claims...tax cuts, boost infrastructure, save Alitalia and clean up Naples.

Lisbon Treaty

Originally called the Reform Treaty, the Lisbon Treaty
was drawn up to replace the draft European constitution after
that was thrown out by voters in France and the Netherlands
in 2005. President Giorgio Napolitano yesterday said “Italy must do its part, firstly by ratifying the Treaty, even in this electoral phase. It is essential that we
arrive at European elections in a position to present
citizens with the Union's new framework of objectives and
rules,''
All 27 EU countries will be expected to ratify the
Treaty in 2008 with a view to it coming into force in 2009.
Hungary, France, Slovenia, Malta and Romania have already
done so.

Weekend update

Most polls at present see the centre right winning
elections by a handsome margin, even if all the centre-left
parties were to get back together.
The four most left-wing parties in the coalition, Sinistra Arcobaleno (Rainbow left) led by Romano Prodi will field their own candidate for premier, probably outgoing House Speaker Fausto Bertinotti.

A bit of sport

3-1 Italy beat Portugal.

Party Candidates

It’s looking like the 2 main candidates for the elections are

Democratic Party (DP) : Walter Veltroni, 52 (major of Rome). The Dp was born from the merger of the Democratic Left and centrists Daisy parties.

And

Forza Italia (FI) : Silvio Berlusconi, 71 media tycoon and president of AC Milan, who has already been Italian premier twice (for seven months in 1994 and from 2001 to 2006.)

Whilst the DP will be standing alone, FI party will be joining forces with the right-wing National Alliance (AN) the new formation would be known as the
People of Freedom Party (PDL) or maybe better translated as People's Liberty Party. The Northern League, will also stand alongside the PDL.

It also looks like the DCA represented by Gianfranco Rotondi and the Popolari Liberali represented by Carlo Giovanardi are also joining the coalition.

It is unlikely that the Catholic, centrist UDC party will join them.

Italian daily life & news

So Prodi's government fell, Marini couldn't pull together an interim government and now we are off to polls.
For those of you buying property in Italy you may be worrying about the stability of the Italian government. Well I personally feel that the future changes guaranteed at the polls on 13-14/4/08 will lead to a more stable economy in the future.
Who knows we may even see the return of Berlusconi.
